Breed Standard

Here at The Kennel Birkline, we breed with the ideal Doberman Pinscher standard in mind, and adhere to recommendations issued by both the American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club. There are minor differences between them; mainly height and temperament. Our dobermans are tall, appropriately chested, with a family focused temperament.

“The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.”

“The Doberman Pinscher is a square-bodied, smoothly-muscled, elegant dog of medium size with a short coat. The head is wedge-shaped with high-set ears that may be cropped or hang naturally. The naturally arched neck flows into smooth shoulders, which continue into a strong straight topline, continuing on to the tail which appears to be a continuation of the spine. The length of the head, neck and legs are in proportion to the length and depth of the body… The appearance of the Doberman Pinscher should convey power and elegance.”

Temperament

Our Doberman puppies are raised with the ideal family companion in mind. We use early socialization alongside a variety of harmless stimuli to promote sound, reliable temperaments in all our pups.

These include a variety of people, noises, situations, and other animals.

“We have our fourth [Doberman], and in our opinion it’s the only breed to have.”

Sue Hesch, from Indiana, USA

We usually breed reds and blacks, but we do occasionally have litters of all four colors!

Health

We often hear heart-breaking tales of beloved Dobermans who have suffered early deaths due to genetically inheritable diseases. While there is never a guarantee, even with mechanical and physical testing, performing these procedures on our dogs provides the highest level of certainty for healthy production.

Our Birkline verified dams and studs are genetically tested and paired wisely to prevent this kind of unnecessary heartache, including von Willebrand Disease (vWD), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), ensuring your puppy the very best chances at a long, healthy life. We use an Embark Full Panel testing for our stock, which includes the relatively new DCM2 risk marker. Even our puppies get a full genetic test so you know what risk factors, if any, you and your veterinarian should discuss.

Our team members each have their eyes examined, hips and elbows x-rayed, as well as their hearts checked using echocardiogram and a 24 hour holter test. Finally, our dogs are wormed bi-annually, inoculated annually, and each month they receive heartworm, flea, tick, and intestinal parasite prevention.
